Let us tell you that Hari Dwar means the gate of Hari. In Hindu religion, Hari is called Lord Vishnu. Badrinath, one of the four Dhams of Uttarakhand, is also a temple of Lord Vishnu. Therefore Haridwar is also called a gateway to reach Lord Vishnu. The most special ghat of Haridwar, Harki Paidi, is called Brahakund. According to the beliefs of Hindu religion, the nectar obtained from the churning of the ocean had fallen here only.
Gateway to Gods
Uttarakhand is called Devbhoomi. Because apart from the four Dhams of Kedarnath, Badrinath, Yamunotri, Gangotri, there are hundreds of ancient temples present here. The history of all these temples is thousands of years old. But to enter these temples in the Garhwal region of Uttarakhand, one has to come through Haridwar, hence it is also called Gateway to Gods.
Mayapuri
Let us tell you that the oldest name of Haridwar is Mayapuri. This place is counted among the seven Mokshadayini Puris. Apart from this, Haridwar has also been called Gangadwar in ancient times. Because after emerging from the mountains, Haridwar also comes to the Ganga plains.
Har Ki Pauri Ghat
The most famous Har Ki Pauri Ghat of Haridwar. The ghat was built by Vikramaditya in the memory of his brother Bhrithhari. On this very ghat, King Shweta had performed penance for Lord Vishnu. Pleased with his penance, when Lord Vishnu appeared before him and asked for a boon, King Shweta said that this place should be named after the Lord. It is said that since that time the water of Har Ki Paidi is called Brahma Kund.
Behind the Har Ki Paidi Ghat, there is a temple of Mansa Devi Maa on Balwa Mountain. On the other side of river Ganga, Chandi Devi temple is built on Neel Parvat. The temple of Chandi Devi was built by Raja Suchet Singh of Kashmir in 1929 AD. There is a temple of Maya Devi in Haridwar, one of the major 51 Shaktipeeths of India. Mother Sati’s heart and navel had fallen in this temple.
